Port and Maritime Authorities request collaboration of small boats in Guanabara Bay

06.15.2020

Fishermen, sailors and navigators in general should pay extra attention to the entry and exit of merchant ships through the Cotunduba Canal.

Recently, large ships started using the Cotunduba Canal at night, the main access to the Port of Rio de Janeiro, which gained new nautical signals. The second phase of experimental nighttime maneuvers ("ramp up"), with ships ranging from 286 to 306 meters, should start in about ten days. With this, the Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ), the Capitania dos Portos do Rio de Janeiro (CPRJ) and the Praticagem RJ joined efforts to raise awareness among fishermen, sailors and navigators of small boats, in general, so that they leave free navigation route popularly known as "Canal Varrido" and that redouble the attention in order to avoid accidents.

During the first phase of the "ramp up", four experimental nighttime maneuvers were carried out during the months of April and May. During this period, working together, boats from CDRJ and CPRJ scanned the channel, accounting for about 90 approaches to small boats, in order to clarify the need to leave the site. "We are working together with the Maritime Authority for the safety of everyone and it is essential that fishermen, boat crews and sailors collaborate with the teams, leaving the channel free for the entry and exit of ships", stressed the president-director of CDRJ, Francisco Antonio de Magalhães Laranjeira.

The operating procedures are supported by the companies leasing the MultiRio, ICTSI and Triunfo Logística terminals in the Port of Rio de Janeiro, which provided speedboats and scanning equipment. In addition to having direct communication with the CDRJ and the Port Authority, the motorboats also interact with the Praticagem RJ, responsible for conducting the ships in the maneuvers. "Every detail of this coordinated action is taken into account by the teams so that the performance of the maneuvers is safe and efficient", explained Commander Luiz Antonio Raymundo da Silva, member of the Technical Council of Praticagem RJ.

Also with the objective of minimizing risks and protecting users, the Capitania dos Portos started to publish an alert to the navigators and a video among the fishing communities and nautical entities. According to the Captain of Ports, Ricardo Jaques Ferreira, "the use of social media has brought information to several sailors. Respecting the navigation rules is essential for fishermen, sailors, amateurs and large ships to live together in safety."
